I’ve been around the block a few times…literally! I’ve moved house several times over the past 10 years and I’ve come to realise a few things that make the whole process that bit easier. I don’t want you to have to suffer like I have to learn these things so I thought I’d jot them down for you to read.
First up is a biggie…
Get Rid Of Stuff
After about the third or fourth move, I realised that I had lots of things lying around that I rarely, if ever, used but each time I moved, they would have to get packed up and unpacked again the other end. Not only did it mean move day itself was more tiring and painful (stairs are not my friend), it meant I was holding onto things that could be of use to someone else.
Immediately I started a big clearout and not only did I find that I could sell a fair few things to make a bit of extra cash, it also did some good for the charities who I donated old clothes and bric-a-brac to.
So go through everything you own, clothing, electronics, DVDs, kitchen equipment, the lot, and make piles of things to sell and give away. Try to do this every year or so to keep your home tidy too.
Cleaning Is A Pain
Because I rent, it matters how I leave a flat or house when moving on to pastures new. Once upon a time you’d find me with my marigolds on and my scrubbing brushes out trying to make a place sparkle and it would take me a whole day to do. This came straight out of my holiday time at work and it was something I absolutely loathed doing.
So instead, I decided that the best course of action would be for me to go into work as usual and leave all the cleaning to a professional company. There are whole companies dedicated to end of tenancy cleaning and they offer fairly reasonable rates. Remember, these guys know what they are doing so what used to take me a day, takes them only 4 hours so it makes logical sense that I work my usual day to pay them to do fewer hours work in my old property.
Make A List
You’re probably thinking that I mean a list of all your stuff to take and how it is organised into boxes but I found long ago that the most important thing to get right is not packing but the more official side of business.
So make a list of the following things to take care of:
Make Your Next Move Less Stressful
If you follow these 3 crucial steps then moving house needn’t be so much of a hassle. In fact, moving home should be an exciting adventure and not something to be worried about all the time. These tips can help you realise this goal.
